Max is an electrochemical engineer with over 16 years of experience turning clean energy technologies into real-world solutions. He has contributed to innovations in materials, systems, and product development that helped move novel technologies closer to commercial adoption.
Max has held senior technical and leadership positions, leading cross-functional teams and international partnerships to deliver large-scale technology projects. He is an inventor on multiple patents and a widely published author.
Max brings this wealth of experience and knowledge to his role as BCIT’s Program Manager for the BC–Yukon Hub of the Lab to Market (Labs4) program. By connecting innovators with mentors, partners, and commercialization pathways, he will help researchers and entrepreneurs transform cutting-edge ideas into ventures with market and societal impact. Max is passionate about strengthening Canada’s innovation ecosystem and supporting Canada’s future entrepreneurs.

As Program Head at the Applied Research Liaison Office (ARLO), Stefan Joseph assists research faculty in defining projects, identifying appropriate sources of funding, and preparing and coordinating successful proposals and applications for funding.
He also acts as liaison with government and industry, providing these groups with information related to applied R&D at BCIT, including resources, policies, and projects. Stefan is BCIT’s Research Grants Officer, NSERC Representative, CFI Coordinator, and member of the Research Ethics Board.
Stefan offers a mix of R&D and business expertise. He holds two master’s degrees, one in science and one in engineering. In 1993, he was elected the first Technology Development Fellow of the BC Advanced Systems Institute, which later merged with the Innovation Science Council of BC to form the BC Innovation Council (now Innovate BC).
He was the principal researcher on a number of R&D projects, is a registered Professional Engineer, and has completed SFU’s Management Skills in Advanced Technology (MSAT) program.
Stefan has several years of experience as Chief Operating Officer within the BC high-tech industry. Other work experience includes Manager, Industry Contracts and Grants at UBC’s Industry Liaison Office, Research Grants Facilitator for the Faculty of Applied Science at SFU, and Industrial Technology Advisor for the National Research Council. Stefan was also a member of the ASI Business Advisory Board (BAB).
