Emergencies
If you suspect an overdose, call 9-1-1 right away, and then call Campus Security at 604.451.6856. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects those responding to an emergency, even if you have substances on you.
BCIT is committed to informing students, faculty, and staff about responding to overdose, harm reduction resources, substance use health and recovery options. We aim to raise awareness among the BCIT community through several initiatives:
- Regular naloxone and overdose response training will be offered to students, faculty, and staff through presentations, workshops, digital communication and print materials.
- Harm reduction information and tools will be made available to the BCIT community.
- Recovery and treatment supports & resources are shared via presentation and digital communication.
- Student Housing staff and Resident Advisors are trained on emergency protocols and naloxone administration. Students living in residence are informed of naloxone locations via posters and ongoing meetings. Regular naloxone trainings are offered to students living in residence.
- The Healthier Substance Use, Harm Reduction & Recovery Working Group coordinates and provides learning opportunities for the campus community, focusing on prevention, reducing stigma, and exploring diverse recovery pathways. For more information, you can contact the Working Group at health-sub-use@bcit.ca.
