What Must Be Reported Immediately to WorkSafeBC

The following are considered serious incidents and must be reported to WorkSafeBC immediately, and investigated as required by the Workers Compensation Act, Section 68:

  • Serious injury or death of a worker
  • Major structural failure or collapse of a building, bridge, tower, crane, hoist, temporary construction support system, or excavation
  • Major release of a hazardous substance
  • Fire or explosion that had the potential to cause serious injury
  • Blasting incident that causes personal injury
  • Dangerous incident involving explosive materials, whether or not there is an injury
  • Diving incident that results in death, injury, or decompression sickness requiring treatment

 

How to Notify WorkSafeBC

WorkSafeBC must be notified immediately (24/7) once imminent life‑safety issues are addressed:

If You Believe a Serious Incident Has Occurred

  1. Call 911 first if there is a serious injury, medical emergency, or immediate danger.
  2. Call BCIT Security (604‑451‑6856) to request BCIT First Aid.
  3. If it is safe to do so, move injured or exposed persons to a safe area.
  4. Notify your supervisor or manager.
    • If you cannot reach them, notify BCIT Security directly (604‑451‑6856).
  5. Protect the incident scene.  You may only disturb the scene to:
    • Help injured or deceased persons
    • Prevent further injury or death
    • Protect property that is at risk
