BCIT’s Safety, Security and Emergency Management Department works diligently to ensure the safety and security of all members of the BCIT community. This being said, safety and security of the campus community is everybody’s responsibility, and we encourage students, employees and visitors to make themselves aware of the services we provide, and to speak to a member of the security team should you have any concerns. In addition, if you are in distress, please consider speaking to someone you trust. BCIT provides counselling services to both students and staff.
We know that we live in an unpredictable world, and the best we can do is be as prepared as possible. We want to provide advice to the community which can be of help during an emergency situation, and we have posted some information below that will help should a hostile person enter and threaten one of our campuses. While every incident is different and could require a unique response from BCIT and the appropriate authorities, we hope that as we all become better-prepared, we can help each other during times of crisis.
Please review the following Personal Safety Action Plan [PDF] to build an awareness of what to do if you are ever faced with an active threat situation.
The following video is designed to create awareness and prompt you to consider your options if you are ever faced with the unthinkable: an individual shooting at people at random in a populated area.
The video simulates the conditions you might experience during an active shooter event. Some people might find the video disturbing. It might help to view the video with others, such as classmates, friends or colleagues, so you can talk about it after you have watched it. If you think you need to talk to a professional, there are resources available for students and staff.
