Financial stress impacts a student’s ability to be successful in their studies. At BCIT, students consistently cite finances as a top reason for discontinuing their studies before graduation. For instance, in the 2021 Full-time Student Engagement Survey [PDF], 38% of BCIT students surveyed identified finances as one of the main factors most likely to prevent completion of the program. We know that past and current financial challenges are associated with increased reports of psychological distress. BCIT has a number of policies and programs to make the institution more affordable and accessible to low-income students, including awards for need-based aid.
