Do
- Educate yourself.
- Be open with your students about expectations.
- Follow your curiosity.
- Listen to your students.
- Talk with your colleagues.
- Put a GenAI statement in your syllabus.
Don’t
- Ask students to use GenAI in any way that requires them to enter their personal information (e.g., signing up for a personal account).
- Expect that you can catch students who use GenAI by using GenAI detectors.
- Use of AI detection tools is prohibited at BCIT.
- Uploading student work to a GenAI tool without the student’s consent is prohibited at BCIT.
- Any system that claims to detect the use of GenAI doesn’t work.
- False positives are VERY high (especially with anyone whose first language isn’t English).
- You will waste valuable time trying to interpret incomprehensible dashboards that provide “scores” based on numerous metrics.
