Today’s media and marketing is relying far more heavily on creative cloud and marketing cloud software to create content for distribution across many different devices. And that means that jobs in this field are far more prevalent. Employers are eager to find qualified, well trained people with up-to-date skills.

If you’re interested in beginning a career in an exciting changing field of design, marketing, advertising and promotions, one of the most creative and rewarding aspects is through media design. This program offers you courses with a specific focus on design, hands-on creative cloud software skills, and marketing knowledge for jobs like digital designers, marketing specialists, communication designers, and event planners.

As you learn business planning skills and the essentials of design, software, marketing and advertising, you’ll also design, create, and prepare a professional portfolio to present to clients and potential employers to help begin and accelerate your career.

About Part-time Studies

Take a single course, or work towards a credential — all at a pace that's right for you.

Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible day time delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there's space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January) and Spring/Summer (April).

To apply to a Part-time Studies program and earn your credential, you simply need to complete a Part-time Program Declaration Request. Applications are processed throughout the year.

Applicants to the BCIT School of Business are required to have completed two years of full-time study in high school or post-secondary program in English in an English speaking country. If you do not have English 12 and have not studied in an English-speaking country, you will need to demonstrate your skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Declaring your Part-time Studies program ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete a program as it is currently outlined and provides you the opportunity to apply for transfer credit.

  • If required, convert transcripts and documents to PDF files.
  • Have a credit card ready to pay the application fee.

This hands-on program combines the strategic approach of Marketing Communications with the techniques of multimedia technology. By focusing on specialized training you’ll need in promotional marketing, you’ll have the useable skills employers are looking for, including an understanding of the most current industry programs like InDesign and Photoshop. You’ll also gain an understanding of the broader range of marketing and advertising concepts to further your career, including how to prepare and present a professional portfolio.

Students with approved Program Declaration, please note: Program matrix changes effective September 2016 may impact you as follows.
  • If your program declaration lists MDIA 3015 - InDesign 3 and you have not completed it, please contact PTS Coordinator Paul Sawyer (604-456-1011) to determine an approved substitute course.
  • If your program declaration lists MKTG 3322 - Promotional Strategies and you have not completed it, please complete MKTG 3554 - Digital Branding instead.
  • If your program declaration lists MDIA 2098 - Portfolio Design and Presentation and you have not completed it, please complete MDIA 2310 - Portfolio Design instead.
Please note: part-time programs and courses are open enrolment and although we make every effort to accommodate demand, course registration cannot be guaranteed in every semester. High demand courses fill quickly and may result in students unable to register for a course that semester. Courses may also be cancelled due to low enrolment.

  • Produce professional typographic composition

  • Apply colour theory principles to promotional materials
  • Develop a professional marketing strategy

  • Prepare electronic files for digital print output

Graduate employment outcomes

The BCIT student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2017-2019 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2016-2018 graduates and for Degree 2015-2017 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. Apply for graduation

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
