About Part-time Studies

Take a single course, or work towards a credential — all at a pace that's right for you.

Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible day time delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there's space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January), and Spring/Summer (April).

To apply to a part-time program and earn your credential, you simply need to complete a Part-time Program Declaration Request. Applications are processed throughout the year.

To be successful in BCIT's fast paced applied learning environment, it is strongly recommended that students have English proficiency in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Two years of education in English in an English-speaking country and English 12 are strongly recommended for success. For information on English equivalencies, testing and upgrading options, visit:

Part-time Finance diploma

Part-time students considering applying to the Finance diploma are strongly advised to begin their studies by completing the Certificate in Finance. The content covered in the program helps provide the knowledge skillset for students to excel in the diploma program. Upon completion of the certificate program, students are then recommended to continue their studies towards the Finance diploma program.

Previous full-time students, who have successfully completed Level 1, considering completing the Finance diploma through Part-time Studies, are advised to complete the Certificate in Finance.

Upon completion of the certificate program, students are then recommended to continue their studies towards the Finance diploma program.

Previous full-time students, who have successfully completed Level 1 and Level 2, considering completing the Finance diploma through Part-time Studies, are advised to apply through the Part-time Program Declaration process.

Courses

Program delivery

This part-time studies program is offered on a course-by-course basis, allowing you the flexibility to complete courses in any order, provided that any required course prerequisites have been completed. Students register for each course individually and may undertake studies in any term (Winter, Spring/Summer, or Fall). While you may choose the pace of your studies, all program requirements must be completed within seven years as per BCIT Policy 5103 - Student Evaluation [PDF].

Please note that some courses in this program are offered only once or twice per year, and BCIT reserves the right to cancel courses if enrolment is insufficient.

In-classroom delivery is available for most courses in the program. Some courses are also offered online.

The length of most online courses is 12 weeks. Online learning students should plan to spend an average of seven-to-ten hours per week on their studies for each course.

Program Details

This program is specifically designed to give you a broad exposure to financial, economic, accounting, and investment knowledge and opportunities. Perfect for students who want the career flexibility offered by knowledge of both accounting and finance. As part of your experience at BCIT, you’ll get real-world training with working professionals and graduate having written and passed the Canadian Securities Institute exam.

Program length

The rate of progress through the part-time program varies. Although most individuals take three to five years to complete their studies, students have up to seven years to complete the program requirements.

Accreditation

The accounting profession, through its professional bodies, recognizes a wide variety of subjects offered in the program. The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Certified General Accountants' Association of Canada, the Certified Management Accountants Society and the Canadian Credit Institute give credit for various subjects, and our graduates are able to achieve a professional designation within two years of receiving their BCIT diploma.

Students who choose the Finance program will write the Canadian Securities Course examination. Successful completion is a mandatory step for anyone considering a career in the field of financial planning or in any aspect of the investment world. In addition, it is a prerequisite for all other courses and programs offered by the Canadian Securities Institute.

Continue your education

BCIT offers part-time students the opportunity to complete a series of credential programs, ultimately leading to a Bachelor degree. If you apply and qualify, you can work towards the following credentials:

Degree Completion – Bachelor of Technology in Accounting

The Financial Management department offers an Accounting degree completion program to those who already have an Accounting, Finance, or Financial Planning diploma or equivalent. Please see our Bachelor of Accounting program for more information.

Universities will give credit for subjects taken in the program to those students who wish to continue their training and qualify for a university degree. Block transfer credit arrangements are in effect with Thompson River University, Simon Fraser University, the University of Northern British Columbia, Royal Roads University, and Lakehead University.

With the focus on practical skills, BCIT’s program gets you ready to perform in your new financial career from the first day. Because of the wide variety of courses through the program, graduates have a similarly wide variety of jobs in the financial, accounting, and investment industries.

While many students begin their careers immediately upon graduation, others decide to continue their education for a bachelor’s degree, which is required to pursue a Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation or the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. This diploma program ladders directly into BCIT’s Bachelor of Accounting program, and is recognized at many universities for block credit transfers.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
