Course Overview
This course is the first of two courses (the second being FMGT 4510, Business Finance 2) that provides students with the tools and concepts required for the financial management of a business. The perspective taken is that of maximizing shareholder value, subject to legal and ethical constraints. Topics include free cash flow, the time value of money, financial statement analysis, corporate financial planning, working capital management and an introduction to capital markets and securities valuation and an introduction to capital markets and securities valuation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the relationship between business success and corporate finance expertise.
- Explain management’s primary goal and the relationship between free cash flow, cost of capital and value of the firm.
- Determine the effect of the financial environment on the corporation.
- Compute and interpret the main ratios included using the five categories of financial statement ratios (liquidity, productivity, profitability, financial leverage and valuation)
- Analyze a firm’s main financial ratios’ evolution across time and compare these ratios to relevant industry average using real‐life examples.
- Perform time value of money calculations under different compounding frequencies.
- Assess and evaluate the effect of risk on required rate of return, securities’ value (bonds and stocks), the cost of capital and the value of the firm.
- Compute the amount of external capital required to support a firm’s future growth.
- Analyze alternative net operating working capital and short‐term financing policies.
- Describe the main aspects of the blockchain technology and this technology’s impact on finance (ex. working capital management, use of cryptocurrencies).

- The following dates will be HELD IN-CLASS at the Downtown Campus and have MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. Midterm: Wednesday, July 16, 2025 (17:30 - 20:30), Midterm Debrief: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 (17:30 - 20:30) and Final Exam: Wednesday, August 27, 2025 (17:30 - 20:30). This is not a self-paced course. You will be expected to be available and online on the posted days and times shown on your registration schedule. It is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. The in-person dates/classes are required for students to attend, and have MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. Course content, type and quality of assignments, and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. To be successful in this online course, plan to spend 7-10 hours per week on your studies, or more of it’s a condensed course, starting Week 1.
