BCIT works with external partners such as the City of Burnaby and TransLink to improve sustainable commuting options to campus, where transit, carpooling, cycling, rolling, walking, and telecommuting are the preferred choice over driving alone to campus.
The Campus Plan provides high-level policy direction to create a pedestrian friendly walkable campus that reduces the number of drive alone/single-occupancy vehicle trips, increases transit service options, reduces parking demand to free up land for new uses, and support cycling and walking. This will create space to allow BCIT to develop its campuses to support future educational needs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and traffic congestion.
BCIT Campus Planning and Facilities worked with Watt Consultancy Group and the campus community, on developing a comprehensive Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Strategy, completed in 2023. This Strategy provides a roadmap for how the BCIT Burnaby campus will advance sustainable transportation. The TDM identifies transportation priorities for the Burnaby campus for 2026 (short-term), 2031 (medium-term), and 2046 (long-term) to manage and reduce campus vehicle parking demand.
Promote Sustainable Transportation Choices

Reduce Vehicle Parking Demand
Reduce the proportion of drive-alone trips in single-occupancy vehicles.
Increase Awareness of Sustainable Transportation Choices
Promote sustainable transportation choices that support the campus community in reducing its environmental footprint through programs and services.
Improve Campus Transportation Infrastructure
Improve and retrofit existing campus transportation infrastructure and facilities and incorporate sustainable transportation infrastructure within new capital projects.
Delivering Sustainable Transport for BCIT
Each of the goals is supported by a series of practical actions that will advance sustainable transport options for the Burnaby campus over the next quarter century. Some of these are already being worked on, while others are part of our long-term planning for campus.

Getting To & From BCIT

Coordinating and developing partnerships with external organizations to improve sustainable transportation connections within Burnaby and the broader Metro Vancouver region to the campus.
Increase Awareness of Sustainable Transportation Choices

Implementing programs, policies, and operational procedures to increase awareness of sustainable transportation options, support the campus community to make more sustainable choices, and provide flexibility in how people travel to campus.
Transportation Facilities

Providing new and enhancing existing campus infrastructure and services that are owned, managed, and operated by BCIT. This includes housing, streets, active transportation facilities (walking, cycling, rolling), signage, and vehicle & bicycle parking facilities.
Pricing & Financial Incentives

Using pricing and financial incentives to level the playing field to make the sustainable travel choice the more affordable and convenient option for most trips to campus. Rethinking the economics of transportation is a powerful way to accelerate sustainable travel to campus.
