Computing Part-time Studies courses listed by sector:
Computing Part-time Studies offers more than 150 courses at night and on the weekends.
COMP 1002 – Applied Computer Concepts or equivalent knowledge is the foundation for all higher-level computing and IT courses.
Our ‘COMP’ prefix courses cover the following Computing and IT subject areas.
- Web Technologies
- Database and Analytics
- Networking and Security
- Programming, Software Development and Agile
These courses may be taken separately or as part of BCIT credential programs.
Part-time Studies COMP courses are designed to be completed one course at a time.
Some students may be successful in taking two PTS courses per term.
We do not recommend trying to complete more than two PTS courses per term.
The workload outside of class in many COMP courses is more than 10 hours per week.
Attendance is mandatory in PTS, missing any more than one lesson could result in failure.
Most COMP courses require specific prerequisites or equivalent knowledge.
Many courses require teamwork and presentations so all students must have strong English is written and oral skills and be able to work in groups.
All “COMP” courses are built on top of COMP 1002 – Computer Concepts which teaches personal computer literacy, file management and system security.
- COMP 1002 – Applied Computer Concepts
You are required to have basic Windows PC knowledge before starting any of the following application training courses.
- COMP 2010 – Microsoft Office
Learn to be proficient in the standard MS Office applications and complete this course in 6 or 12 weeks.
Expert level skills are provided for the individual courses for MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These courses are taught to Industry Certification Standards and will help prepare students to challenge the Microsoft exams where available.
One-Day MS Office Seminars
These non-credit workshops that are tailored for those who would like to increase their efficiency in their day-to-day tasks. Participants will gain a working knowledge of applications in just one day.
- COMP 0261 – MS Excel Workshop Level 1
- COMP 0264 – MS Excel Workshop Level 2
- COMP 0269 – MS Excel Workshop Level 3
- COMP 0379 – Macros and VBA with MS Excel
These workshops are non-credit; those wishing to obtain BCIT credit for these courses have the option to write a PLAR exam for an additional fee.

COMP 1002 Applied Computer Concepts or equivalent ability using MS Windows and file management on networks is required.
Participants must already be functional in the use of a Windows PC, file management, and have a working knowledge of these subject areas.
These hands-on, instructor-led workshops are designed to increase confidence in day-to-day tasks using the following MS Office applications.
One-day weekday non-credit upgrading courses
- COMP 0261 – MS Excel Workshop Level 1
- COMP 0264 – MS Excel Workshop Level 2
- COMP 0269 – MS Excel Workshop Level 3
- COMP 0379 – Macros and VBA with MS Excel
One-day workshops are non-credit; those wishing to obtain BCIT credit for MS Excel have the option to write a PLAR exam for an additional fee.
Six-week accelerated credit courses
The following accelerated course sections cover the same topics and depth as their twelve-week counterparts.
If you already know how to use MS Windows or MS Office, you may consider upgrading your skills to the latest versions in only 6 weeks.
If you already know some HTML web scripting you may consider upgrading or fast-tracking your skills in only six weeks.
There is an expectation of attendance, 6 hours in class and significant homework each week.
Students are advised to calculate their workload before registering in any other courses at the same time.
Dental Office Receptionist – Statement of Completion
Do you communicate well and enjoy working with the public?
BCIT Computing offers 3 part-time computer-related Dental Office Receptionist courses.
These courses also prepare students to work in dental specialty offices, institutional clinics and dental insurance companies.
We currently receive regular requests from dentists who are eager to hire our graduates.
- COMP 0885 – Dental Office Receptionist, 12 weeks, part-time
- COMP 0285 – Dental Office Computer Systems, 12 weeks, part-time
- COMP 0985 – Dental Office Insurance Billing Systems, 4 weeks, part-time
Take 3, 6 or 9 months to complete these 3 courses – it’s your choice.
These courses are scheduled every term in January, April and September.
Participants must be able to communicate at a BC Grade 12 English level.
