If you meet all of the entrance requirements for a program but no seats are available, you will be placed on the waitlist for the next available seat. Seats become available when other accepted applicants:

  • Do not pay the commitment fee (two weeks after acceptance), or
  • Do not pay tuition (60 days before the program starts), or
  • Decide to withdraw for any other reason.

This varies from year to year, and Admissions will continue to maintain the waitlist until the end of the first week of classes. By then, if a seat isn’t offered to you, your application will be closed and you will have the opportunity to apply again.

While you are on the waitlist, you will not be able to apply for another program. If you wish to withdraw your application to apply for another program or because your situation has changed and you no longer plan to attend BCIT, please contact Admissions.

When a seat becomes available

When a seat becomes available Admissions will contact you by phone* and/or send correspondence to you via myCommunication to confirm your interest in the available seat.

You must then contact Admissions by the deadline provided to confirm your interest in the seat.

*If you provided a non-Canadian phone number: Admissions will not contact you by phone or leave a message. When a seat becomes available, we will only send correspondence to you via myCommunication, which triggers a notification to your personal email account. You must then contact Admissions by the deadline stated in the official correspondence sent to myCommunication in order to confirm your interest in the seat.

Failure to respond or declined offer of an available seat

If you decline or do not respond to the offer when a seat becomes available, what happens next depends on the way that waitlists are managed for your program. A different procedure is followed for each of the two categories described below:

  1. Programs accepting applications on an ongoing basis (do not have a specific start date)
If you decline or do not respond to the first offer, your application will be returned to the waitlist. Admissions will contact you again when a seat becomes available. If you decline or do not respond to the second offer, your application will be withdrawn and you will need to re-apply. If at any time you do not wish to remain on the waitlist, contact Admissions and request to withdraw your application.
  2. Programs with specific start dates
If you decline or do not respond to this offer, your application will be closed and you will need to reapply. These programs do not carry a waitlist from year to year; you must apply to a specific start date. If you are not offered a seat by that date, your application will be closed. To be considered for a future start date, you must submit a new application.
