You can apply to the co-op program stream, which is a competitive process. Information on the application process to co-op will be provided during the first term of your program. Students in the co-op stream maintain full time student status while registered in a co-op work term.
Civil Engineering Co-op students develop a strong foundation in engineering principles through an industry-driven curriculum that combines classroom learning with applied laboratory, design, and project experience. Students are well prepared to support infrastructure projects and apply technical, communication, and problem-solving skills in consulting, construction, municipal, and government settings.

Student profile & capabilities
After the 2nd year (Co-op Term 1) students have acquired:
- strong skills in oral, written, and graphical communications;
- well-developed background in mathematics and natural sciences;
- an understanding of hydrology and hydraulics, structural analysis, soil mechanics, surveying, construction management, road design and municipal engineering;
- programming and engineering software skills, including MS Excel and Civil3D;
- an appreciation of the importance of safety and sustainability in engineering activities; and
- an understanding of the various roles and disciplines of professional engineering.
After the 3rd year (Co-op Term 2) they have developed:
- an ability to recognize potential conflicts and apply engineering ethics and professionalism;
- an understanding of and an ability to assess uncertainties in engineering;
- practice in fluid mechanics and thermal science, structure and properties of materials, geotechnical engineering; and
- participation in multi-disciplinary engineering design projects.
After the 4th year (Co-op Terms 3 and 4); they are trained with:
- practice in structural engineering and environmental engineering;
- an understanding of electronic sensing and measurements used in civil engineering; and
- development and application of computational methods in solving complex civil engineering problems.
