Overview
The GDIM Diploma is designed for graduates of graphic design certificate programs. The program offers advanced training in UI/UX, web and mobile design, motion graphics, experiential design, art direction, and interactive media technologies. To note – BCIT Certificate in Graphic Design grads may be able to ladder directly into the diploma.
About the program
In an industry rapidly evolving through artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, the ability to adapt and stay current is more critical than ever. The Graphic Design and Interactive Media (GDIM) Diploma program goes beyond traditional graphic design, offering comprehensive training in UI/UX, web and mobile design, motion graphics, experiential design, art direction, and interactive media technologies. This program includes a Graphic Design internship and features a dedicated course—Interactive Media Technologies—designed to explore emerging tools and trends to ensure students stay ahead in the field. The curriculum is continuously updated to reflect industry advancements, equipping students with the technical expertise and creative agility needed to thrive at the intersection of design and technology.

Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first-qualified basis as long as space remains.
- English language proficiency: Category 2 – English Studies 12 (67%) or equivalent
- Post-secondary: one of the following completed within the past five years:
- A Certificate in Graphic Design from BCIT or
- Alternate entry: A Certificate in Graphic Design or related discipline with a minimum of 30.0 credits from a recognized post secondary institution other than BCIT. Alternate entry applicants must complete and email the following pre-entry assessment form to digitalarts@bcit.ca to have their education assessed by the department:
- Pre-entry Assessment form [PDF]: The program area will review your assessment. You may be asked to submit additional documentation and bridging courses may be required. Once your pre-entry assessment form has been signed by the program area, you can upload it and submit your online application.
Applicants who have completed post-secondary studies outside of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand will require a comprehensive evaluation of their credentials by the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Credential evaluation reports from other Canadian services may be considered. These reports must include course-by-course evaluations and GPA calculations.
Recommended for success
To thrive in the Graphic Design and Interactive Media (GDIM) Diploma program, applicants are encouraged to meet the following recommendations in addition to the minimum entrance requirements:
- Attend an information session before applying to gain a deeper understanding of the program’s structure, expectations, and career outcomes.
- Proficiency using Windows and/or macOS, including file organization, keyboard shortcuts, and digital workflow efficiency.
- Solid understanding of basic computer concepts and logic, including online file sharing, cloud-based collaboration, and troubleshooting.
- Previous experience with industry-standard design software, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and UI/UX tools such as Figma or Adobe XD.
- Strong time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and collaborate effectively in team-based environments.
- A growth mindset and adaptability, especially when working with emerging technologies and evolving design practices.
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants.
Study permit: A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.
Students enrolled in this program must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation. A co-op work permit is required prior to starting the work component.
Post-graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility: This program meets the eligible field of study requirement (CIP) and is eligible for students to apply for a PGWP.

Blended: This program is delivered partly on campus and partly online.
Continue your education
Graduates of this program may continue their studies to complete the BCIT Bachelor of Creative Industries (BCI) program. The BCI program provides you with the flexibility to complete your degree full-time within 8 to 12 months (depending on previous transfer credits from other institutes), or you can choose to begin your career and finish your degree courses part-time, usually within two to three years.
Block credits from your diploma may also be transferred to business degrees at Simon Fraser University, the University of Northern British Columbia, Royal Roads University, Lakehead University and others. Please confirm details with the respective program that you are considering if this option is of interest.

Professional associations
Design Professionals of Canada (DesCan) serves as a national body for design advocacy, working to elevate the status and caliber of Canadian design professionals. The organization confers the Certified Design Professional (CDP) credential, which represents a commitment to excellence and leadership in the field, to practitioners with a minimum of six years of combined education and experience.
The Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) is a Canadian professional body that grants graphic designers a formal designation recognizing their standards of practice and professionalism. Design graduates undertake a rigorous certification process to become a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD). Certification for design practitioners involves seven years of education and/or relevant work experience, which can include a two-to-four-year post-secondary diploma or degree in graphic design or related field.
The GDIM diploma program equips students with the skills and knowledge to achieve professional recognition, complemented by comprehensive education and opportunities for mentorship and networking.

The Program Advisory Committee (PAC) for the Graphic Design and Interactive Media program will include working professionals from across industry sectors, including marketing, design, development, UI/UX, and content creation. These professionals will be consulted to ensure the program remains current and aligned with the needs of the industry.
