Course Overview
This course investigates the ethical dimensions of graphic design and technology, with a strong emphasis on cultural sensitivity and the diverse contexts in which design operates. Students will engage in critical analysis of how design influences public perception and the ethical implications of persuasive techniques, considering cultural perspectives and Indigenous knowledge. The course provides practical tools and ethical frameworks to navigate dilemmas in design, using case studies to explore real-world scenarios. By the end of the course, students will be adept at creating projects that reflect ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity, developing a personal code of ethics for their professional practice. The course also addresses the ethical responsibilities of designers in digital and social media, including the management of user data, platform dynamics, and intellectual property issues, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of responsible design practices.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Assess the role of design in shaping public perception while considering the ethics of persuasive design techniques in diverse cultural contexts.
- Apply ethical frameworks and other practical tools to address ethical dilemmas in the context of graphic design and technology, including case studies and real-world scenarios.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge related to design, and the ways in which this knowledge can inform ethical design practices.
- Create design projects that incorporate ethical considerations, while developing a personal code of ethics to guide future design work.
- Examine the ethical responsibilities of designers in the context of digital and social media platforms, particularly concerning user data, platform dynamics and content creation.
- Identify and address issues related to intellectual property, plagiarism, and the responsible use of design resources, with a focus on ethical and legal considerations.
