Students enrolled in an eligible BCIT program on a full-time basis are not required to make payments on previous student loans received through StudentAid BC. There are two ways to maintain in-study payment-free status on your Canada-B.C. integrated student loan:

  1. Apply for and receive further student financial assistance
If you are a returning student and are receiving additional full-time funding, you will not have to begin repayment. Previous loans through StudentAid BC will automatically be placed into in-study payment-free status when your enrolment is confirmed for your full-time funding in each study period.
  2. Apply for in-study payment-free status
If you are a returning student and are not receiving further full-time funding, you must apply to maintain your in-study payment-free status so that previous loans do not go into repayment while you are in study. You may apply for in-study payment-free status through the StudentAid BC dashboard or the NSLSC portal.

One application will keep both your outstanding Canada student loan and your B.C. student loan from entering repayment. Please note that part-time enrolment will not prevent previous full-time funding from entering repayment. Part-time in-study payment free status will prevent only previous part-time loans from entering repayment.

Students who have previous loans with a province other than BC may be required to submit alternate documents. Please contact your home province for detailed information.

NOTE: Confirmation of your enrolment must be received by the NSLSC on or before the date you return to studies to make sure that in-study payment-free status is in place for your study period start date.
