Academic Awards

Scholarships

• Awarded to students who achieve the highest average in the first year of their program while maintaining a 100% course load.
• These awards are monetary.

In term achievement awards

• Awarded to students with outstanding marks in specific courses or demonstrated excellence in qualities such as leadership, service and class participation.
• Selection made by program areas/Schools.
• These awards are monetary.

Notes:

• Students are considered automatically for these awards; no application is needed.
• Recipients will be notified of results in the fall (October) of their second year, except for some degree programs where notification occurs in the third or fourth year.

Graduating academic certificates

• Diploma Certificates awarded to students who achieve the highest average in the final year of their diploma program while maintaining a 100% course load.
• Degree Certificates awarded to students who achieve the highest average in the final two academic terms of their program (FT degrees – at least 60% course load required), or the highest overall average in the program (PT degrees).

Graduating awards

• Awarded to students who achieve the highest average in the final year of their program while maintaining a 100% course load.
• These awards are monetary.

Grad achievement awards

• Awarded to students with outstanding marks in specific courses or demonstrated excellence in qualities such as leadership, service and class participation.
• Selection made by program areas/Schools.
• These awards are monetary.

• Students are considered automatically for these awards; no application is needed.
• Recipients will be notified at graduation (June).

• Certificates awarded to outstanding students in each School: Business; Computing and Academic studies; Construction and the Environment; Energy; Health Sciences; and Transportation.
• Each School has up to four awards each year (where applicable), one from each of the following graduating credential categories: Diploma, Certificate, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree.  Only credentials with a minimum of 45 credits are eligible
• Selection made by Deans.

• Recipients will be notified at graduation (June).

• The Governor General’s Academic Medal is presented each June to the top student who obtained the highest overall weighted average in the last two academic terms at BCIT.
• The student must be graduating from a full-time 2-year Technology (Undergraduate) Diploma program.

Special Graduating Awards

The following awards recognize outstanding graduating students. Students must be nominated by at least two nominators.

Advanced Diploma Graduating Achievement Award

Presented to a student graduating from BCIT with an Advanced Diploma. The recipient must have an excellent academic record and have contributed in a positive way to the life of the Institute or the community at large.

Board of Governor’s Award for Leadership

This award is presented to a full-time Technology or Trade graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the BCIT community, and who has achieved at least a 70% class standing. Consideration is also given to activities and leadership in the outside community.

Graduating Achievement Award for Baccalaureate Degrees

Presented to a student graduating from a BCIT Bachelor’s degree program. The recipient must have an excellent academic record and have contributed in a positive way to the life of the Institute or the community at large.

Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation

The Lieutenant Governor’s medal program recognizes B.C. public post-secondary students in two-year diploma programs and four-year undergraduate programs. In 2019 changes have been made to the program criteria, which will now recognize students who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of inclusion, democracy and/or reconciliation within their campus community.

President’s Award

Presented to a full-time Technology or Trade graduating student with a first class standing who has a record of active participation in student activities, including ones that have brought recognition to the Institute, and has demonstrated strong teamwork skills.
