2020 BCIT Student Awards Celebration
In 2020, over 600 BCIT students received awards. We are very proud to recognize their success, which was demonstrated by outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and positive contributions in our community. Congratulations, students, and thank you, donors, who made many of these awards possible.
2020 Featured awards
These achievement awards recognized outstanding BCIT students that exemplified excellence, both as students in their programs and as leaders among their peers.

This award is presented each June to the top student graduating from a full-time, two-year Technology program. This student has obtained the highest overall weighted average in the last two academic terms at BCIT. This award went to Hayley Olson upon completion of the Diploma in Nuclear Medicine, in the School of Health Sciences.
Hayley is proud to have graduated from the BCIT Nuclear Medicine program. With her classmates and instructors, she enjoyed making memories, including a trip to Anaheim, California for the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Conference in June 2019. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired at three hospitals as well as the BC Cancer Agency, and has been busy ever since, working throughout the Lower Mainland. During her time at BCIT, Hayley loved being a Peer Tutor, and one of her long-term goals is to return to BCIT as an instructor in the Nuclear Medicine program!
Congratulations, Hayley!
This award is presented to a student who has achieved an excellent academic record and contributed in a positive way to the life of the Institute or the community at large. This award went to Sajjad Askarzadeh upon completion of the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, in the School of Energy.
Throughout his time at BCIT, Sajjad not only achieved success in his own coursework, he also sought to support and enhance the success and experiences of his peers as well. Sajjad brought a student voice to BCIT Education Council and Policy Committee, acted as Class Representative in his program area, and established and led tutoring programs and program recruitment initiatives, as well as volunteered for the BCIT IEEE Student Branch, serving in various roles such as Treasurer, Vice-Chair, Chair, and Executive Advisor. In addition to his contributions to the BCIT community, Sajjad made time to volunteer his time to support youth programming in his home community.
Congratulations, Sajjad!

This award is presented to a student who has achieved an excellent academic record and contributed in a positive way to the life of the Institute or the community at large. This award went to Karan Jethi upon completion of the Advanced Diploma in Business Management, in the School of Business + Media.
In addition to achieving great success in his coursework, Karan’s enthusiasm, for both his own work as well as his volunteer activities as a Global Education Ambassador, is widely recognized. His leadership in applying newly acquired skills in the classroom was appreciated by his peers and faculty, and his support of extra-curricular initiatives at BCIT has left a meaningful impact on the Institute.
Congratulations, Karan!
This award is presented to a student who has achieved a first-class average, demonstrated strong teamwork skills, and demonstrated active participation in student activities that have brought recognition to the Institute. This award went to McKintosh (Tosh) Sutherland upon completion of the Diploma in Fish, Wildlife and Recreation, in the School of Construction and the Environment.
Tosh’s leadership, motivation, and positivity have made him a well-respected team player among his classmates and faculty. Throughout his time at BCIT, Tosh impressed industry partners by completing critical and comprehensive research projects, mentored and advocated for his classmates as a Set Representative in his program, and volunteered countless hours for several organizations in his home community—all while maintaining an excellent GPA.
Congratulations, Tosh!

This award is presented to a student who has achieved GPA of 70% or higher and demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the BCIT community or the community at large. This award went to Hunter Van Dyke upon completion of the Diploma in Marketing Management – Marketing Communications, in the School of Business + Media.
Hunter held several leadership positions while completing his diploma. In 2018, Hunter served as the First-Year Liaison for the BCIT Marketing Association, and Set Representative for the BCIT Student Association. In his second year, he served as the 2019/2020 BCIT Marketing Association President and as a BCIT Student Association Councillor. Hunter was also employed as the Red Bull Student Brand Manager at BCIT and Brand Ambassador for the Great Canadian Sales Competition, having competed and placed in the semi-finals in both years.
With the Vancouver Board of Trade Leaders of Tomorrow Program, Hunter volunteered as a communications committee member and participated in its mentee/mentor program.
Twice, Hunter traveled to New Orleans to compete in the American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference. In his second year, he led the team of 26 delegates, who went on to place in the top 10 of more than 280 international schools.
Congratulations, Hunter!
