Industry Sponsored Student Projects

Before the term:

• Submit your proposal online
• Computing faculty reviews and shortlists projects

Project launch

• Students choose projects and contact sponsors
• Sponsors confirm scope, goals, and access to necessary resources
• BCIT assigns faculty supervisors to help students with project management

During the term

• Weekly sponsor check-ins (daily for April/May full-time projects)
• Sponsors and supervisors provide feedback and guidance

Project completion

• Students deliver final presentation
• Sponsors provide evaluations and attend presentations (if possible)

• Provide weekly guidance (daily for April/May term)
• Pay the $500 fee if selected (waived for non-profit)
• Attend the final presentation (if possible)
• Understand students retain IP unless otherwise agreed via BCIT’s standard NDA/IP agreement [WORD]

Projects from any industry are welcome.

Ideal projects are:

• Well-defined, achievable, and technically supported
• Challenging enough to apply student learning

Since there is no guarantee of success or when/if a project is selected, mission-critical or time-sensitive projects are not recommended.

There are various project durations and timing options depending on the programs:

If a project’s scope is too large for one term, it may be resubmitted for further work (fee payable for extra terms).

Unselected projects may remain in the pool for future terms.

By submitting a project to BCIT’s ISSP program, I agree to:

• No guaranteed deliverables. I understand that students are still learning, and results will vary
• Be available weekly (or daily for intensive terms) to guide and support the student team
• Pay a $500 participation fee per selected project (waived for non-profits)
• Attend the final presentation (if possible) and provide feedback on student performance
• Accept that students own the intellectual property (IP) they create. If needed, I’ll use BCIT’s standard NDA/IP agreement [WORD]

While students do not receive payment for their work, a Participation Fee of $500 (+tax) is charged for each selected project. An invoice will be issued to the sponsor upon project acceptance.

If a sponsor has multiple projects selected or a project spans multiple terms, the fee will be applied per project, per term.

Participation fees are waived for non-profit organizations, provided they can supply a valid charity registration number or proof of official NPO status.

Eligible R&D projects may receive NSERC Alliance Grant support:

• Up to 66% of total costs
• $20K–$1M annually
• Duration: 1–5 years
• Approval in 4–8 weeks
