BCIT is a public post-secondary institution that specializes in applied learning and creating workforce-ready graduates. Our programs are designed to meet key mandates from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training (AVED) and offer the building blocks for future-proof workplace skills. Our mission is to supply quality education and training to support our students’ career goals, and give BC the skills our economy needs. BCIT is administered under the College and Institute Act.

BCIT is governed by two bodies: the Board of Governors and the Education Council. Each works to support the Institute’s aims in slightly different capacities.
Board of Governors
The Board of Governors oversees the business interests, management, and long-term development of BCIT. As the link between the Institute’s Senior Leadership and British Columbia’s government, the Board of Governors interprets how BCIT implements provincial policies and priorities.
BCIT’s Education Council (EdCo) focuses on academic matters, including policy setting, awards, academic standing and exams.
Policies are developed to support BCIT’s mandated goal of providing quality applied education. All policies are approved by either the Board of Governors or EdCo before they are put into effect.
Elections are held for both the Board of Governors and the Education Council.
Attend a board meeting
Open Board meetings are accessible to all. To make a presentation at an open Board meeting, please send a written request to the Executive Assistant, Governance, at least ten days before the meeting. Include a brief description of the issue. The Chair and President will consider all requests—and those approved by the Chair will be added to the agenda for an upcoming open meeting.
