Accessibility Hub

The committee has the following principles in carrying out its mandate:

• Access: Persons should have barrier-free access to education, services, places, events, and other functions that are generally available to BCIT community members;
• Equity: Persons should have barrier-free access to those things that will give them equity of education, opportunity and outcome;
• Universal design: Access should be provided in a manner that does not establish or perpetuate differences based on a person’s disability; and
• Systemic responsibility: The responsibility to identify, prevent, and remove barriers rests with the person or organization that is responsible for establishing or perpetuating the barrier.

The Accessibility Steering Committee is supported by five working groups that focus on key areas of accessibility at BCIT. These groups identify barriers, develop recommendations, and support the implementation of accessibility initiatives across the Institute.

• Accessibility Feedback Working Group: Reviews accessibility feedback from the BCIT community and helps identify, prioritize, and address accessibility barriers.
• Built Environment Working Group: Focuses on improving the accessibility of BCIT’s buildings, outdoor spaces, infrastructure, and campus environments.
• Communication, Information, and Technology Working Group: Works to improve accessibility across websites, digital tools, communications, information resources, and technology systems.
• Education Working Group: Promotes accessible teaching, learning, and curriculum practices, including Universal Design for Learning and accessible educational resources.
• Employment Working Group: Advances accessible and inclusive workplace practices by supporting recruitment, hiring, accommodations, retention, and employee success.
