BCIT requires employees’ legal names for some purposes, but in many cases can use a person’s “preferred name.”
Preferred name (where available)
Your preferred name may appear in:
- Microsoft Outlook
- Service BCIT
- BCIT ID Card
Updating your preferred name
An employee can edit their personal information, including their preferred name through the employee dashboard.
Legal name (required use)
A legal name must be used for the following documents:
- Official letters with legal implications (e.g. offers of employment, contracts)
- Tax forms
- Benefit applications
Legal name change
If an employee chooses to change their legal name for any reason, they can upload their government issued ID (or a marriage certificate if the name change is due to marriage) through Service BCIT’s Ask a General HR Question with the topic ‘update personal information’ selected from the drop-down menu. HR will update your legal name on your employee record in Banner and also with service providers such as Manulife and Pension Corporation (if applicable).
