The Intramural Leagues at BCIT Recreation Services are a fun way to join an organized and structured sports league. BCIT Recreation Services offers leagues in Volleyball and 5-on-5 Basketball. The leagues run after most classes end on weeknights and provide students with an opportunity to meet others and play in a safe sport environment.

This league is intended for players looking to have fun, meet new people and/or hone their skills in a semi-competitive environment. Games are played at the net height of 2.24m. You might consider joining if:
- You and/or your team are all about having fun and enjoying light competition!

Advanced Division: (Mixed Category)
Mixed-Category: This category welcomes individuals from all genders; however, teams must adhere to a minimum number of 2 women (trans women and femme aligned folks encouraged to join) on the team who play a minimum of 50% of games in the regular season. Women must play during playoff games if team qualifies.

- You have a good overall understanding of volleyball rules.
- Your are a current former high school, club and/or collegiate-level volleyball player. For team sign-up, your team has one or more current or high school, club and/or collegiate-level volleyball players.

Start here if it’s your first time registering as a Free Agent in Volleyball! This chart will help you determine which league will be most suitable to start in for your first season.

With a growing volleyball community, a flex re-pool/reseed will allow teams to be slotted into the best league category. During the first 2 weeks of games, teams will be evaluated by Intramural Staff on a set of criteria. This, alongside teams’ Win-Lose Record will be considered during re-seeding, which may result in a team moving into a different category for the remainder of the season. Restructuring of the league will allow for a balanced league and still fun for all participants!
How Flex Re-Pooling Works
There are two possible re-pooling structures
- Week 1 and 2: Recreational and Advanced Leagues (True to Registration)
- Week 2 – 8: Recreational and Advanced Leagues (Top 4 teams in Recreational move into Advanced, Bottom 4 teams in Advanced move to Recreation)
OR
- Week 2 – 8: Recreation, Intermediate, and Advanced Leagues (Top 4 teams in Recreation move into Intermediate, Bottom 4 team in Advanced move to Intermediate)
*The first 2 weeks of games will not count towards league standings.

- Alumni must join an existing / established team for the upcoming season. There is no Free Agent Alumni registration.
- Alumni player time constraints must not inform team time constraints.
- Participating in intramurals as an alumni is a privilege. A high degree of sportspersonship is expected from all participants, including Alumni registrants. Incidents related to sportspersonship will not be tolerated and will not follow escalating conduct resolution steps, but result in immediate suspension from the league and possible prevention from joining future programs.
Please note, alumni registration is being offered for the Fall 2026 season as a pilot program; continued participation in future seasons (i.e. 2027) is not guaranteed.
A minimal team fee is required to organize these exciting leagues. The fee covers:
- Supplied equipment
- Structured, organized league format
- Updated weekly standings
- Scheduled play-offs for qualifying teams
- Championship games & medals
Q: I don’t know anyone but want to join an intramural league. What should I do?
A: Sign up as a Free Agent and you will be assigned to an existing team, or placed on a team with all Free Agents. You will have the opportunity to meet your team and choose a Captain/team name (if applicable) them at the Pre-Season Meeting!
Q: Me and my friends want to play together but we don’t have enough players to form a team. What should we do?
A: Sign up as Free Agents, but add to the notes and email the Sports Programs & Intramurals Coordinator to request to play together – requests can almost always be accommodated. Do not take up a team slot if you don’t have enough players.
Q: I keep getting an error ‘No Designated Alternate Key’ when registering online? What gives?
A: If you are a BCIT student or staff, an account in our registration portal has already been made for you. When logging in for the first time, you must follow the instructions on the login page to access this account. In doing so, the system will recognize you as an active student or staff, a prerequisite for intramural registration. If you’re still having issues, please contact us.
Q: What happens if I can’t make the Pre-Season Meeting?
A: The Pre-Season Meeting takes place during the time where games would take place. If you are unable to make that time on a regular basis, it may be worth reconsidering joining a committed league. If you are unable to make just the date (ie. for an appointment, one-off school thing etc), please email the Sports Programs and Intramurals Coordinator. It is especially important for Free Agents to a) be there or b) let me know in advance that they can’t make the meeting.
Q: I’ve changed my mind. Can I get a refund?
A: Full refunds will be issued prior to the Pre-Season Meeting. Refunds after the meeting (ie. once the league has begun) will be given for extenuating circumstances (ie. leaving BCIT, injury or illness etc), assessed on a case-by-case basis. You can request a refund by emailing the Sports Programs and Intramurals Coordinator.
Q: How does league scheduling work?
A: Teams are scheduled for a mix of all three game times throughout the season. Requests for certain game times can be made, however in big leagues (eg. Volleyball with 18 teams), it’s not 100% guaranteed. Scheduling requests are prioritized if the majority of team members a) have academic reasons they cannot make certain game times or b) are traveling from another campus to Burnaby Campus.
Q: How many players should we have on our team?
A: It is strongly recommended you have at least 2-3 registered subs on your team to accommodate for last-minute things that come up throughout the season such as academic commitments, illness or injury.
