Filing a formal complaint with RDI

If you believe you have experienced discrimination, harassment, or bullying you are encouraged to try to address your concerns informally. However, if this option is not appropriate or does not resolve your concerns you may choose to file a formal complaint under Policy 7507, through the RDI Department.

As a reminder, complaints against students may be better addressed via the Student Conduct Process.

Consult with RDI

If you are considering a formal complaint, speaking with RDI before you submit your complaint is strongly recommended. We can help you understand the process, answer questions, and discuss available options.

How to file a formal complaint

  1. Consider speaking with your Student Advocate or Union Representative about your options.
  2. Contact RDI to arrange a meeting to learn more about the complaint process.
  3. Request and complete the formal complaint form (let RDI know if you require any accommodation to participate in this process).
  4. If your complaint is against more than one person (Respondent), complete a separate form for each person.
  5. On the form, describe the conduct or comments you believe are discrimination, harassment, and/or bullying, when it occurred, and by whom. You can reach out to a union representative or a student advocate if you need support in filling out the form.
  6. Indicate if you would like to attempt the formal resolution process (e.g. mediation) or instead prefer an investigation.
  7. Submit the complaint to RDI. Note that a copy of the complaint, which will contain your name, will be shared with the Respondent.

Complaint process

The RDI department remains neutral throughout the process and may support a voluntary formal resolution process, investigate, or both, depending on the circumstances. Please note that RDI does not take sides in disputes and does not advocate on behalf of either party. The RDI office remains neutral throughout the process and may support a voluntary formal resolution process, conduct an investigation, or both, depending on the circumstances.

Investigations

If formal resolution is not appropriate, is declined, or does not resolve the matter, the RDI department may begin an investigation.
