Transfer Credit

You've worked hard for what you've accomplished and you should get credit for it. Find out if the credit from a course you've completed at another academic institution is transferable to BCIT. Search for a course using our database:

Note: If you would like to receive transfer credit toward a credential with BCIT, we will perform a transfer credit evaluation. All information contained within our equivalency database reflects the current BCIT requirements and is subject to change at any time, without prior notification. When using the database, ensure that the information you enter comes directly from an official transcript to avoid discrepancies between the equivalency database and the institute's official transfer credit evaluation.

If you do not see a desired BCIT equivalency, you can still apply for credit as new equivalencies are continually approved. Be sure to include a detailed course outline or syllabus and official transcript with your application.

Did you also know the knowledge and skills that you have acquired outside of a recognized program—through volunteer work, your hobbies, on-the-job experience or independent study—may qualify for credits at BCIT and exempt you from particular courses in your chosen program? If you think you may be eligible to receive credit for what you already know, find out more about Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition.

Depending on your program of study, BCIT has several options for assessing and granting transfer credit:

Full-time programs

If you have completed studies at another post-secondary institution and believe they are equivalent to what is taught at BCIT, you may be eligible for course credit or advanced placement within your chosen program.

Individual course credit

You can also apply for course credit after you have been accepted into your chosen program. If credit is granted, your program tuition likely will not change, but your course load will be lighter. This could be an advantage, but if you are applying for financial aid, you may not be eligible for certain kinds of assistance unless you carry a minimum course load.

To apply for course credit in a full-time program, complete a Course Credit/Exemption Application form [PDF] and submit it with an official transcript showing the courses you have completed that are equivalent to those taught at BCIT.

Requests to audit or cancel a course credit must be submitted in writing to Student Records up to 14 calendar days into a term.

Advanced placement

If you believe that you have already completed a portion or your chosen program, you should apply for advanced placement.
