All Students must complete Construction Operations before the credential in Construction Supervision can be earned. No exceptions.

Ongoing education and training of personnel at all levels is vital to the continued success of any construction-related business. As workers advance in their careers and encounter new challenges in their particular management area, they may require new or additional skills in order to cope effectively with these challenges and excel at their work.

The construction industry places significant value on training, not only for immediate individual success but with a long-term goal of meeting the increasing shortage of qualified personnel. BCIT is offering a multi-level, Part-time Studies program designed specifically for people who:

have industry experience and want to upgrade their skills,
are active in some facet of the industry and wish to enhance their career potential, or
wish to continue their ongoing education.

The program

The Construction Supervision program consists of nine courses: Construction Documents and Contracts, Basic Project Management Skills, Technical Writing/Interpersonal Skills, Basic Construction Design Principles, Construction Materials and Assemblies, Computer Applications in Construction, Safety Legislation, Environmental Legislation, and Construction Estimating. These courses build on the previous ones by introducing more comprehensive and complex issues. Students receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program.

On the Courses page, click the course numbers on the right-hand side (e.g., BLDT 1011) to review details such as schedule, cost, etc. Course outlines will also be posted when available.

Again, the Construction Operations program is required prior to Construction Supervision – no exceptions.

	BLDT 2011	Construction Documents and Contracts The construction contract is a vital document in any construction project. This course examines the various components that comprise a contract and the corresponding responsibility of each participating party. The course also provides students with a basic understanding of construction contract documents and an understanding of the principles of a contractual relationship. Using the latest version of the CCDC II - 2008 contract as a model, contract definitions, interpretations, and disputes are discussed. A number of scenarios and procedures will be reviewed with examples that typically accompany performing and fulfilling contractual obligations. Prerequisite(s): 50% in BLDT 1031 course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2021	Basic Project Management Skills Provides students with the basic concepts of project management. This includes project planning, project controls, cash flow projections and documentation of the project. This course may be eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant. Students register themselves into the course, then apply for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant to cover payment, if eligible. Prerequisite(s): 50% in BLDT 1031 course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2031	Technical Writing/Interpersonal Skills Continues from BLDT 1051. Further development of writing skills required in the construction industry as well as basic instruction in interpersonal skills and human relations. Prerequisite(s): 50% in BLDT 1051 course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2041	Construction Design Principles This course presents an overview of a variety of structural engineering topics that will enhance the graduates' ability to comprehend structural building systems. Topics include: structural systems, introduction of engineering theory (statics), and earthquake and lateral considerations. Structural systems in wood, steel and concrete will be explored. The course is delivered through lectures and problem solving sessions. Prerequisite(s): No prerequisites are required for this course. course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2051	Construction Materials and Assemblies A conceptual introductory course which acquaints students with the materials and assemblies encountered in project work from Divisions 1-9 of the Masterformat. Reviews how physical properties of the materials are derived and how these properties are implemented in the construction project. Reviews how to select, handle, purchase, and measure materials as part of the project technical/management team. Prerequisite(s): No prerequisites are required for this course. course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2061	Computer Applications in Construction Presents practical computer applications with an emphasis on construction documentation, economic problems, estimating and scheduling associated with project and construction management of construction projects. Topics include use of MS Excel and MS Project software. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Construction Operations program or departmental approval and a background in a Windows and Excel environments. course outline	3.0
	BLDT 2071	Safety Legislation Defines the contractor's and owner's role in construction as it pertains to site safety and accident prevention. Prerequisite(s): No prerequisites are required for this course. course outline	1.5
	BLDT 2081	Environmental Legislation Defines the contractor's and owner's role in construction as it pertains to site environment accountability. Prerequisite(s): No prerequisites are required for this course. course outline	1.5
	BLDT 2091	Construction Estimating 2 Covers estimating of wood frame structure, steel structure, and above grade concrete structure with a focus on multi-family residential and small commercial projects. Introduces Planswift Estimating Software Topics include: various take-off procedures to create an estimate and prepare and print a variety of estimating reports. All students must have Completed BLDT 1041 prior to this course - NO EXCEPTIONS. Prerequisite(s):** 50% in BLDT 1041 course outline	3.0

Program Details

Program length

All courses are either six or twelve weeks in duration. Classes are held weekly from 6:45 p.m to 9:45 p.m at the Burnaby campus. Various courses are offered in all three terms. Particular courses are sometimes offered in successive terms depending on demand. For upcoming offerings, check the most recent BCIT Part-time Studies flyer or our website. Potential students are advised to weigh their professional and personal commitments carefully when planning their academic calendar. This will help them determine how many courses they are able to attend in one term, and the overall time required to complete the program.

Grading

A grade of 50 percent is required to pass all courses. Grades are based on course work, midterm exam(s), and a final exam.

Accreditation

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has implemented a Gold Seal designation for qualified:

site superintendents
estimators and
project managers.

Each applicant must meet a number of requirements, including an educational component with specific topic criteria. These criteria as well as an overview of the Gold Seal program can be found on the CCA's website.

BCIT provides the educational component of the Gold Seal requirement through the Construction Operations and Construction Supervision program. BCIT does not issue any credentials on behalf of Gold Seal; the Canadian Construction Association administers the Gold Seal program and issues the appropriate credentials.

Students who are interested in entering the Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management should check the entrance requirements for the program. Depending on your background, completion of the Associate Certificate in Construction Operations might assist you in meeting the entrance requirements for the degree program. Please note that completion of this program alone is not sufficient to be admitted to the degree program.

Job opportunities

Job opportunities are varied, and an increasing number of employers are looking for employees who have successfully completed the program. Typically, students start in positions such as project coordinator or junior project manager.

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
