apply to a program :: part-time studies

To take most courses or start many of the programs offered through part-time studies, you are not required to apply and be accepted. In most cases, you pick the courses you want to take, register, and then pay your fees. If you plan to complete one of the many programs offered through part-time studies you should complete an Application for Program Approval [PDF, 435KB]. It is a good idea to complete two or three courses before submitting your program approval.

Step One: Choose your program

You need to know what program you want to study before you can apply.

Step Two: Meet the entrance requirements

Although there are some exceptions, you do not need to meet any particular entrance requirement to start or complete most programs offered through Part-time Studies. All Part-time Studies courses and programs are taught assuming participants have a Grade 12 level of education, including English at the Grade 12 level.

Step Three: Prepare your application

Download and complete an Application for Program Approval [PDF, 435KB]. Application forms are also available at the Burnaby and Downtown campuses. When completing your application, please be sure to indicate:

  • your certification type (certificate classification);
  • your program name
  • all courses you have completed to date and all courses you intend to take to satisfy the program requirements.

Step Four: Submit your application

Submit your completed application by mail to:

Student Records Office
British Columbia Institute of Technology,
3700 Willingdon Avenue,
Burnaby, British Columbia,
Canada, V6H 3H2

Step Five: Receive notification

Once your application has been processed and reviewed by a Program Advisor, a letter confirming your approved program of study will be mailed to you. Applications for Program Approval take approximately 6-8 weeks to process.

Why apply for program approval?
Applying for Program Approval allows you to declare a program of study and outline the courses you intend to complete to meet the program requirements. Receiving Program Approval ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete a program as it is currently outlined. BCIT continuously reviews programs and implements changes based on industry and market trends. Program Approval guarantees that credit for courses which are a part of your program will be honoured despite program requirement changes.
