Overview
This 20-week harmonized Foundation training program is designed to provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enter the trade. This includes core skills such as safety, tools and equipment, and employability. It also provides the students with hands-on training to perform service operations such as new unit assembly and service; repair electrical components; and to service chassis, wheels, suspensions, final drives, and accessories.
Program delivery mode: blended
- This program will be delivered as a combination of online and on-campus learning. While some of your coursework will take place online, there will also be in-person sessions.
- Faculty will notify students of when their attendance on campus will be required.
Your education is our priority and we will continue to deliver the applied instruction, collaborative experience, and industry connections that you expect from BCIT.
Technology requirements
- You will need access to a personal computer with video and microphone for the online portion of your program.
- See Student Technology and Discounts for general technology recommendations and negotiated discounts from BCIT partners.
Safety in shops
- Because this program will be delivered in a blended format, you will be required to attend shop activities in person. Our Occupational Health and Safety team has assessed our classrooms and shops to ensure we practice safe operating procedures in accordance with public health and safety guidelines as well as WorkSafeBC standards for post-secondary institutions.
Services and support
- Our Student Services staff continue to offer advice, care, and support as needed to optimize your learning experience. Many services, including Student Health Services and Counselling and Student Development are offering phone or virtual appointments to BCIT students.
Upon successful completion of BCIT’s harmonized Motorcycle Technician Foundation program, students receive credit for the first level of technical training required in the provincial Apprenticeship program plus 300 work based hours.
Students also have an option to receive an endorsement from the Yamaha’s Technical Academy (YTA). The Yamaha endorsement course available through BCIT is known as the YTA Bronze level. To successfully complete the Bronze course, the student must pass an exam that covers the engine, drive-train and chassis systems and service procedures on Yamaha products.
Please visit the Industry Training Authority website for the Motorcycle Technician program standards and more details about the program.

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2019-2021 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2018-2020 graduates and for Degree 2016-2018 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.
