Course Details

Presents a practical study of Canadian business law, including the legal and administrative systems, torts, contracts, sale of goods and consumer protection, secured transactions, employment, agency and business organizations. Participation in this course, taught by lawyers, prepares you to recognize and feel comfortable with the legal aspects of doing business.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the historical and constitutional foundations of Canada’s legal system.
  • Describe the structure of the court system and alternate dispute resolution methods including procedural steps required for each method.
  • Differentiate between the various types of intentional torts and negligence claims and applicable defenses for each.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for an enforceable contract and the factors that may affect it.
  • Contrast the ways a contract may end and the different effect on the parties.
  • Compare different types of business organizations and the resulting rights and obligations arising from each.
  • Explain the legal obligations of employees, employers, agents, fiduciaries and independent contractors.
  • Analyze and compare fundamental legal concepts in relation to real estate and personal property including both tangible and intangible property.
  • Compare and contrast the rights and obligations of creditors and debtors pertaining to various types of credit and security including negotiable instruments, mortgages and bankruptcy.
  • Explain legal obligations in sales transactions.
  • Recognize the potential for, and ways to avoid legal issues as they arise in business transactions including the use of insurance.
  • Use of accurate legal language for effective communication with legal advisors.
