The CLEAR Framework can be applied to conflicts occurring in the learning and working environments. CLEAR creates space for mutual understanding. It doesn’t require deep expertise in conflict resolution, just a willingness to slow down and choose curiosity over assumption. It’s effective across roles, from faculty and instructors to administrative staff to group projects and student leaders.

The simplicity of the framework makes it easy to remember and apply, especially under pressure. When conflict flares, the CLEAR model helps teams re-ground in respect and shared purpose.

Putting CLEAR into practice

A faculty team may use it during course planning disagreements. A trade faculty may apply it when teaching apprentices. Students may lean on it in group projects. It can be adapted for email communication, staff meetings, or informal hallway conversations.

Conflict isn’t the problem

Conflict is often a necessary disruption. It asks: Are we still aligned? Are we communicating clearly? Are there values being ignored?

The problem isn’t the presence of conflict, but the absence of constructive approaches to move through it. The CLEAR Framework doesn’t avoid tension, it engages it with skill, humility, and structure. In doing so, it transforms conflict from something feared to something that can foster accountability, clarity, and trust.

In essence, CLEAR isn’t just about managing conflict, it’s about elevating communication.
