This course teaches students a variety of skills including project definition, WBS, SOW, activity development, network diagrams, three-time estimate method to assess risk and schedule a project, resource levelling, time cost trade-offs and estimating, earned value, reporting and progress measurement during project, project termination and the role of project personnel. This course is based on the Project Management Institute (PMI)® Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and can be used as credit towards the BCIT Associate Certificate in Project Management https://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/5085acert. PMI® and PMBOK® are trademarks of PMI®

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Describe what a project is and project management practices, functions, phases, terminology and issues.
Understand project engineering economic analysis, screening and selections methods.
Define and apply a functional and matrix project organizational structure and work breakdown structure (WBS) to assign and define the work.
Define and apply risk, configuration management and top quality management techniques to better manage a technological project and problem solve.
Define and apply the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), Critical Path Method (CPM) and Gantt Chart to schedule a project; statistical, parametric and learning curve methods to estimate activity duration and statistical methods to cope with uncertainty in a project schedule.
Define and apply project budgeting techniques and life cycle cost analyses.
Incorporate resources into the schedule: plan resource utilization, conduct resource leveling and resource limited scheduling and investigate project management software that accomplishes the above.
Control a project budget and schedule: examine effects of actual schedule performance, incorporate changes into the schedule, update the schedule and approaches to schedule control including time-cost trade-offs.
Measure the performance of a project: budget allocation, cumulative budget cost, actual and budgeted cost comparison; determining the value of the work performed using earned value and percent complete; cost performance analysis using cost-related measures, variances and performance indices; forecast costs based on project performance; examine cost control and investigate project management software that accomplishes the above
