The Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic) [PDF] balances the rights and responsibilities of students with the standards and expectations in an educational and professional environment. BCIT expects all students to behave responsibly, respect the rights of others, treat others with dignity and respect, abide by laws and legislation, and avoid bullying and harassing behaviour.

BCIT aims to be fair, reasonable, and consistent with students when it comes to responding to alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct (non-academic). When addressing potential violations, all students have the right to the following principles of procedural fairness:
- Right to know the allegations received by BCIT
- Right to respond to the allegations and respond to any evidence compiled as part of the investigation
- Right to a final decision that is fair, reasonable, and free from bias
- Right to appeal a decision
Emergencies: If you are reporting an emergency requiring immediate assistance, call BCIT Safety & Security or 911.
For students
- Address concerns early and directly
- Seek support and guidance from your instructor, the Student Life Office, or the Respect, Diversity, and Inclusion Office
- Explore resources for conflict resolution
- Maintain confidentiality—involve only those who need to know the information
For faculty and staff
- Create a team or project charter with students
- Contact the Learning and Teaching Centre for support designing courses in a way that promotes respectful classroom dynamics
- Attend a related professional development session
- Book a related presentation or workshop
for faculty, staff, or students - Acknowledge students’ complex needs and support their wellbeing, and effectively respond to students in distress
- Address concerns early and directly
- Seek support and guidance from your Supervisor, Manager, or Student Success, as needed
Application of the code
The Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic) applies to non-academic conduct of students that:
- Occurs on the Institute’s premises;
- Involves any Institute related activity, both academic and non-academic, including online activities; or
- Occurs off the Institute premises and is related to activities sponsored by the institute or is alleged to have an adverse impact on another person’s reasonable participation in the programs, activities, or employment at the Institute.
Sexualized violence: If you have suffered, witnessed, or been informed of a sexualized violence incident at BCIT, you can make a secure and confidential report, as well as accessing resources and supports.

BCIT’s procedures for submitting, reviewing, investigating and making decisions related to allegations of non-academic misconduct are outlined below.
Where appropriate, try to resolve the problem directly with the student. Do this calmly, respectfully, and in confidence. Often, a student may not be aware that their behaviour is inappropriate and may change the behaviour once they are aware of the problem. Where matter cannot or should not be addressed informally, you may wish to submit a BCIT Student Conduct Report.
