Overview
Level B: This program develops more advanced welding skills and related theory than were taught in the Welder Foundation program: pipe welding, gas tungsten arc welding, etc., providing graduates with a broader base of skills and more employment opportunities.
The 16-20 week course length is followed by a job experience component, which then qualifies the candidate for B Level Certification. The B Level stamp is entered into the Welder’s Log Book by the SkilledTradesBC, located at #800 – 8100 Granville Avenue, Richmond, B.C., V6Y 3T6. Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains. When available intakes are full, qualified applicants are wait-listed.
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements prior to applying to this program. If you are uncertain or don’t meet the requirements we strongly recommend you complete any applicable Trades Entry Assessments before applying.
- English language proficiency: Category 3 – English Studies 12 (50%) or equivalent
- Completion of the BCIT Welder Foundation program or other training equivalent to the Level C institutional/college training component of the Provincial Registered Welder program.
Trades Discovery
The Trades Discovery General and Trades Discovery for Women are full-time programs designed to prepare participants to successfully enter and complete a Trades Training program.

Additional program options
Part programs vary according to individual requirements and upgrade option goals. The program is offered on a continuous intake basis where spaces will be filled as they become available. Applicants must be welders currently or recently employed in the field of welding. Registration is done by phone 604-432-8203, or in person in the Welding office, Building NE 8, second floor.

Nearly every industry employs welders. Graduates find work in such diverse workplaces as metal fabricating shops, general repair shops, new construction sites, mining, logging, shipbuilding, pulp mills, sawmills and oilfield camps.
Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2020-2022 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2019-2021 graduates and for Degree 2017-2019 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. - WELD 0102 – Introduction to Welding
This course is a hands on introduction to the common welding processes used in industry. Course will include oxyacetylene, MIG, TIG, and stick welding as well as appropriate safety procedures. CSA approved steel toed boots and 100% cotton overalls required.
- WELD 0103 – Oxyacetylene/Braze/Welding/Cut
Introduces basics of fuel gas welding. Includes safety, shop practice, procedures and operation of related equipment. CSA approved steel-toed work boots and 100 per cent cotton coveralls are required.
- WELD 0106 – Gas Metal Arc Basic (MIG)
Industrial and home hobby powersources will be used in this course. Set-up of equipment and correct selection of shielding gases included. CSA approved leather steel toed boots and 100% cotton coveralls required.
- WELD 0110 – Gas Tungsten Arc Basic (TIG)
Covers shielding gases, electrodes, equipment, and practical applications including light gauge welding, repair etc. Majority of the welding will be done on mild steel with limited use of stainless steel and aluminum included. CSA approved leather steel toed boots and 100% cotton coveralls required.
- WELD 0115 – Aluminum Welding
This course covers all position plate welding. Designed for the student who wants hands on experience and basic knowledge of aluminum welding. CSA approved leather steel toed boots and 100% cotton coveralls required.
- WELD 0120 – Welding for the Artisan
General interest course for those interested in artwork, furniture building and minor repair jobs. Focus is on the oxy-acetylene process – brazing, cutting, forming, shaping and welding. Last two sessions are spent working on a small project of the student’s choice. Project materials NOT included. CSA-approved leather steel-toed boots and 100% cotton coveralls required.
