Overview
About the program
Launch your career in one of aviation’s fastest-growing sectors. The Professional Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Certificate is an intensive, 18-week, full-time program that takes you from little or no drone experience to a job-ready RPAS professional.
You’ll learn to fly, build, maintain, and inspect drones, and to plan and run safe missions in Canadian airspace. Training covers multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, GNSS and GIS mapping, photogrammetry and LiDAR data processing, and hands-on system servicing. You’ll finish with a capstone project where you plan, fly, and report on a real-world RPAS mission.
Throughout the program you will earn these certifications:
- Transport Canada Basic Operations
- Transport Canada Advanced Operations
- Transport Canada Level 1 Complex Operations
- Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A)
Who it’s for
This program is designed for high school graduates, career changers, and people already working in fields such as surveying, agriculture, construction, and environmental monitoring and emergency services who want to add drone applications to their skillset.

Recommended for success
No previous drone experience, licenses, or certifications are required. Along with meeting the admission requirements, you'll get the most out of the program if you:
- Are ready for a full-time pace. The program runs about 30 hours a week for 18 weeks with no breaks. Plan to keep other commitments light.
- Are comfortable with computers. You'll use mission planning, GIS, photogrammetry, and flight configuration software every week.
- Enjoy hands-on technical work. About a quarter of your time is in the shop building, wiring, calibrating, and repairing drones, including electrical systems and small engines.
- Are prepared to work outdoors. Flight training happens in the field, in varied BC weather. Bring clothing and footwear suited to rain, cold, and rough ground.
- Pay close attention to detail and safety. Aviation work depends on following procedures, checklists, and regulations exactly.
- Communicate well and work in teams. Missions are planned and flown in crews, and you'll write reports and present your capstone findings.
