BCIT’s School of Transportation at the Aerospace Technology Campus (ATC) proposes the creation of an Industry Partnership Certificate (IPC) for advanced gas turbine overhaul through applied learning, to provide an agile and rapid response to economic recovery in the aviation gas turbine sector. Initially, the IPC will be established with MTU Maintenance Canada, one of the largest networks of companies overhauling gas turbine engines in the Lower Mainland, but partnerships in the sector will continue to be pursued by BCIT as a way to expand this type of educational provision.
The proposed IPC will be delivered at the industry partner’s worksite, in an accelerated format of 8 hours per day to model the typical industry work schedule, over the course of eight weeks. Graduates will earn a total of 19.5 credits.
Potential students include graduates of any Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician certificate program from a recognized institution in Canada, including the BCIT Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician Certificate.
Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan) has recently provided a $9.3M grant to BCIT to support students with tuition-free enrolment into both the Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician certificate program and this proposed Industry Partnership Certificate. The grant also includes a weekly stipend and additional wrap-around student supports such as Early Assist, learning support (tutoring), and nutritional support through the BCIT Student Association. This funding has also enabled BCIT to purchase the tools, equipment and gas turbine engines to continue to offer this proposed program for the next few decades, as BCIT will retain ownership of these assets, which will be located at the ATC at BCIT and at MTU as required. Once the funding is exhausted, the traditional Aircraft Gas Turbine Technician Certificate program and the proposed IPC program will revert to full-fee-payer status.
