Introduction to Architectural Drafting. Covers basic architectural manual drafting techniques and skills. Drawing development with emphasis on line techniques, graphic symbols and industry standards. Graphical communication required for the preparation of development permit drawings for residential buildings. Covers techniques necessary for creating three dimensional drawing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be better able to:

  • Prepare professional looking drawings using the graphic language, conventions and standards of the building industry.
  • Read and interpret the design ideas and technical information that are described in architectural drawings.
  • Employ drawing conventions, symbols and dimension standards.
  • Produce drawings using a variety of media, especially graphite and ink on vellum.
  • Use drawings as a creative problem-solving tool when developing plans, sections, and elevations.
  • Use free-hand sketching as a tool for quick graphic communication.
  • Document existing building conditions by site-measuring existing spaces and generating the appropriate drawings.
  • Produce a simplified version of a design development package for a small residential project that includes a site plan, floor plans, section, elevations, and a detail.
  • Understand three-dimensional drawing (axonometric) using information from plans, sections and elevations.
