About the program
The Welding Quality and Efficiency Microcredential introduces the industry best practices you need to improve your welding operations. Designed for welders, supervisors, technologists, and engineers working in the field, the program brings together focused training in the qualification of welders and welding procedures, welding economics, welding automation, and welding quality control—giving you practical tools to strengthen your operations and your bottom line.
This program is delivered as blended, online training with supplemental hands-on laboratories, so you can apply your learning to real-world scenarios. You’ll learn how to assess when automation can benefit your operations, how to set up an effective welding quality program, and how to measure the impact of your decisions on cost and productivity.
Tuitions Subsidies Available
For the first offering of this micro-credential, tuition subsidies of up to 100% are available to support participation by equity-seeking and under-represented learners. Two groups are specifically encouraged to apply: welders seeking to transition into supervisory or management roles, and engineers and managers involved in welding operations who want formal training in welding-specific quality and efficiency practices.
Subsidies are awarded by application, not on a first-come basis. Applications close October 16th, 2026 and will be assessed together, with priority given to self-funded applicants and those without employer sponsorship. Applicants will be notified by October 30th, 2026.
How to Apply
Send an email to mathew_smith@bcit.ca with the subject line “Tuition Subsidy Application – Welding Quality and Efficiency” by October 16th, 2026.
Include the following:
- Full name, phone number, and email address
- Current job title and employer (or “self-employed” / “not currently employed”)
- Whether your employer is paying or contributing to your tuition, and how much
- A brief statement (150 words or less) describing why you want to take this credential and what you intend to do with it
- If you wish to be considered on this basis, a statement that you identify as a member of one or more equity-seeking or under-represented groups. Self-declaration is sufficient; no documentation is required, and you will not be asked to specify which group.
Incomplete applications cannot be assessed.

Ongoing Flexible Learning (Part-time Studies) intakes: January, April, and September.

Ongoing throughout the year.
Recommended for success
Prior experience as a welder, welding supervisor, or managing welding operations is not required but recommended. Please indicate your level of welding experience when entering WELD 1290 – Welding Process Labs. Applicants from an engineering or management background will be paired with applicants from a welding background who can complete the welding required during the laboratories.
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants.
Study permit: A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.
Apply to program
Formal application to the microcredential is not required. Upon successful completion of the courses, email the program contact with your full name, student number, and mailing address to be issued a microcredential.

Tuition fees

Books & supplies
Welding inspection tools, such as a steel ruler and a V-WAC gauge, are recommended for WELD 1290 – Welding Process Labs.
