Course Overview
WELD 1290 introduces students to the principal welding and thermal joining processes used in industry through hands-on laboratory practice. Over eight three-hour labs, students operate GMAW (MIG), SMAW (stick), and GTAW (TIG) equipment; investigate how welding parameters affect weld quality and size; fit up and weld the basic joint types; and study practical fabrication issues including welding positions and distortion control. Each lab combines a short introduction and demonstration with structured hands-on activities. The course concludes with weld inspection using visual testing (VT), macro-examination, and guided bend testing, and a capstone fabrication project completed to an industry-style Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), preparing students for real fabrication and quality-control environments.
