Course Overview
This course focuses on the fundamentals of Ableton Live for composing, recording and editing music. Ableton Live is recognized as one of the top competitors in digital music creation and is also recognized for its non-linear composition and audio recording environment while also enabling a more traditional linear arrangement. The course examines automation essentials and tools for creating, editing and producing music compositions. Course studies also focus on MIDI programming, composition strategies, use of device racks, live audio recording and editing, sampling, MIDI instrument design, and mixing for production, collaboration and remixing finished works within Ableton Live. Essentials for setting up the digital audio workstation are covered. Use of Ableton Live for live performance is also explored. Prior knowledge of music theory and prior music experience is helpful but is not essential for this course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use Session and Arrangement views for non-linear and linear composition and recording with proficiency.
- Apply basic music theory and techniques using tools within Ableton to create songs and audio clips.
- Record and edit MIDI-based music.
- Edit and mix professional sounding audio.
- Record professional sounding audio (low cost recording equipment options will be discussed but are not required for the course).
- Audition and select instruments and voices for MIDI.
- Design sounds with audio samples and instrument racks.
- Use tools within Ableton Live which use music theory to create pleasing harmonies.
- Develop musical dynamic song structures and themes.
- Mix and edit recordings.
- Remix works from other artists or collaborate with other artists using Ableton Live.
- Implement generative strategies to overcome writer's block and to enhance compositions.
- Manage files and optimize configuration for computers.
- Use features to assist with live music performance.

A current version of Ableton Live Intro as a minimum is required. See Ableton’s site for purchase and subscription prices and for Ableton’s education discounts if applicable. Purchase options and appropriate editions for the course will be discussed at the first class. Essentials for setting up the digital audio workstation are covered. Prior knowledge of music theory and prior music experience is helpful but is not essential for this course. Prospective students should have solid written and spoken English language skills to be successful in this course. Access to a desktop or laptop computer to complete course assignments outside class is recommended. If seats remain, registration is permitted without approval up to April 23rd, by calling 604-434-1610.
