Course Overview
This hands-on course, or equivalent knowledge, is a prerequisite for all following COMP courses in BCIT Computing Flexible Learning programs. COMP 1002 is a lab-based course that provides students with experiential mastery of a personal computer (PC) using the Windows 11 operating system. Participants must provide their own current PC device (Windows, Mac, or Linux). Registered students are provided with remote access to a virtual Windows 11 lab computer for the duration of the course. Topics include: An introduction to PC hardware, the functions of an operating system (OS), file and disk management, user management, Windows 11 configuration, and troubleshooting. Discussions include networking, security concepts including cyber-security, privacy, malware and firewalls, back-up, and protecting data on a network. Exercises and labs provide applied experience with all aspects of this course. There will be a brief comparison of Windows 11 to Linux and MacOS, including hands-on installation and practice with a Linux distribution. The history and basics of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) are also discussed. COMP 1002 is a required course for the Applied Computer Information Systems (ACIS) Associate Certificate and the Computer Systems Certificate (CSC). Upon successful completion, students will be able to configure, maintain, and manage a secure Windows 11 PC in a networked environment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain how a PC works.
- Describe the relationship between hardware, software, and operating systems.
- Explain the different approaches to cloud computing including Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).
- Classify and explain the function of different computer hardware components .
- Describe OS virtualization and cloud computing.
- Identify Windows 11 user interface components and explain their use.
- Configure and customize the Windows 11 operating system.
- Describe the concepts behind encryption, and its implementation in Windows 11.
- Create users, groups, and account policies.
- Explain basic home and enterprise networking principles.
- Describe basic PC security concepts, malware, and firewalls.
- Back-up your system, and use best practices to protect your data.
- Use file maintenance and file organization for efficient storage management.
- Troubleshoot basic computer issues, and use the resources provided by your system.
- Compare other operating systems including Linux and Macintosh OS to Windows 11.
