Course Overview
Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool that can be used to analyse, communicate and manage information. Those with no prior spreadsheet experience will acquire expert level applied skills in the latest version of MS Excel. This instructor lead, hands-on course focuses on best practices used to create meaningful workbooks and how to master the techniques and time saving shortcuts for the daily use of MS Excel. Students learn to use MS Excel Ribbon interface with contextual tabs, Quick Access Toolbar and how to make use of templates, styles, pivot tables, what if analysis tools and macros via lectures, lab exercises and assignments outside of class. Topics include: creating, editing, formatting and saving a worksheet, sorting, filtering, slicers, applying formulae, functions, importing and exporting data, and consolidating data in multiple worksheets. This course is required in the Applied Data Analytics Certificate (ADAC) and the Applied Computer Applications (ACA) Associate Certificate from BCIT Computing Part-time Studies. By the end of this course, successful participants will be expert end users of MS Excel.

- Demonstrate entering, editing, saving and modifying data in a worksheet.
- Demonstrate formatting and improving the appearance of a worksheet.
- Apply Relative, Absolute and Mixed cell references.
- Apply Basic Formulae and Functions.
- Apply Date and Time Functions.
- Apply Decision Making Functions.
- Apply Financial Functions.
- Demonstrate creating, modifying and formatting charts.
- Demonstrate the use of sorting, filtering and editing lists.
- Apply protection to workbooks, worksheets and ranges
- Analyze data using the Subtotalling tool.
- Create and summarize data with Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts and use of slicer.
- Analyze data using the What-If analysis functions: Goal Seek, Scenario Manager, Data Tables.
- Analyze data using the Data Analysis Tools: Anova, Solver and Histograms.
- Consolidate data and 3D formulas.
- Apply data validation options.
- Apply trace dependents, precedents and trace errors options.
- Demonstrate finding and fixing formula errors.
- Use imported data.
- Use exported data.
- Prepare, create and apply Templates and Styles.
- Demonstrate basic Macro use.

- International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
- Course is 36 hours synchronous online classes. Please Note: Attendance, participation in class and the BCIT Learning Hub are mandatory. You should prepare to spend 2-3 hours on homework for every 1 hour of class time. This course may require an average total time commitment of 9-12+ hours per week. 3 hours of synchronous class time and 6-9+ hours per week for homework. Late registration is not permitted. BCIT Computing is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment. Students must provide their own current model Windows-compatible PC with microphone and video camera. Windows 10 or 11 and Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 is required in order to participate in this course successfully. i5 or higher equivalent processor, with 8 GB of RAM minimum, and 256 GB minimum storage. Highspeed internet access is needed for online sections and for homework. Mac users must have the ability to manage and support their iOS computer. They may need to create a virtual Windows environment using Parallels or VMWare Fusion. COMP instructors may not be able to assist Mac users with software compatibility issues. BCIT does not provide access to Parallels or support for students to use a Mac to run Windows. No class May 16.
