Course Overview
This 100 hour practicum takes place in either a hospital department or related healthcare facility and enables students to apply the skills that they have learned in the BCIT Unit Clerk Associate Certificate. For many, this experience is their gateway into the healthcare system. Some keys to a successful practicum experience include having excellent communication skills, compassion for patients, maintaining confidentiality, having a keen eye for detail, being fluent in anatomy, terminology, and pharmacology, and being software savvy. The course also includes class time to help students prepare for a successful workplace experience. Students will write a resume and cover letter matched to a unit clerk position and prepare for an interview.
Prerequisite(s)
- 65% in CLRK 1000 and 65% in CLRK 2000 and 65% in OFFC 1001 and 65% in OFFC 2001 and 65% in CLRK 1005 and 65% in CLRK 1010 and 65% in OFFC 1055 and 65% in OFFC 1007 and 65% in CLRK 1015
- A valid Criminal Record Check working with children and/or vulnerable adults that is on file with BCIT, and up-to-date immunization records submitted to the department.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Write a targeted cover letter and resume.
- Demonstrate that they are prepared for a practicum interview.
- Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal, and team skills in all work duties where communication skills require clear spoken and written English, correct medical terminology, accurate spelling, and correct grammar.
- Show patience and compassion when dealing with patients, while maintaining privacy.
- Demonstrate professionalism in all work duties.
- Demonstrate critical thinking, decision-making, organizational, and prioritization skills.
- Process physicians' orders.
- Record notes and enter information accurately and reconfirm, as is needed.
- Maintain patient files confidentially and accurately.
- Schedule and rearrange appointments accurately.
- Identify and explain the structure and functions of each body system.
- Use anatomy terminology to communicate with healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrate patient preparation for various visits and medical procedures.
- List the major drugs and drug classes currently used in medical practice.
- Demonstrate how to use medical equipment.
- Perform the infection control protocol needed for a given situation.

Students who register for this course will be audited to ensure that they are on track to have all pre-requisite courses complete prior to starting in April. Your Criminal Record Check and Immunization form will need to be on file to begin your Practicum. A Practicum Orientation class will be held April 10 at 6:00pm on Teams. Any further contact with the Instructor will discussed and scheduled as needed throughout the term. Note that although your practicum will only be approximately three weeks, you must be available for the duration of the course. Students unable to meet this may be removed from the course.
