Course Overview
This course introduces learners to the policies, procedures, and professional standards that guide practice within the British Columbia healthcare environments. Students will examine how unit clerks support the coordination of care by following established policies and protocols. Emphasis is placed on maintaining patient privacy, confidentiality, and information security in accordance with organizational and legislative requirements. Learners will also develop an understanding of workplace safety procedures, including emergency response protocols and escalation pathways used in healthcare settings. The course further explores policies and procedures regarding infection prevention and environmental safety principles. It also emphasizes the importance of professional and respectful communication of policies and procedures within interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Through these topics, students gain foundational knowledge and practical awareness required to perform the health care unit clerk role safely, ethically, and effectively within healthcare settings.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the structure and organization of the British Columbia and Canadian healthcare systems.
- Describe organizational policies and procedures related to patient and staff privacy, confidentiality and information access
- Identify organizational safety alerts, risk indicators, and escalation pathways used to support patient, staff, and visitor safety.
- Describe organizational procedures related to the secure handling, storage, transfer, and disposal of patient information.
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate disclosure of confidential patient health information.
- Describe infection prevention and control procedures used to reduce the transmission of infectious diseases within healthcare environments. •
- Identify waste-management and biomedical waste-segregation procedures used within healthcare environments. •
- Explain hospital policies and procedures using professional, respectful, and patient-centered communication.
