Full-time Apprenticeship 4230appr

An Exciting Career Awaits You!

Note: To be eligible for apprenticeship training you must be registered as an apprentice. Go to the BCIT Apprenticeship website for more information.
The apprenticeship process requires time spent on the job supplemented by in-school training. A Refrigeration Mechanic apprentice must complete a five-year program, including 7,280 workplace hours and 4 years of in-school technical training consisting of 840 in-school hours. After completion of training and passing the Grade B Gasfitter's exam, a B.C. Certificate of Apprenticeship, B.C. Certificate of Qualification, and the Interprovincial Standard Endorsement, also known as Red Seal, will be awarded.

Program Entry

Pathways

There are two ways of beginning your new career as a refrigeration mechanic apprentice:

  1. Take our Refrigeration Mechanic Foundation program. By working through a series of practical projects and assignments and theory assignments you'll build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to make you more employable in an entry-level position. By successfully completing the program, you will also receive credit for the in-school portion of Level 1 of our Refrigeration Apprenticeship training.
  2. Find employment under a refrigeration mechanic who will register you with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). In this option, you are indentured to a company as an apprentice refrigeration mechanic, learning basic skills while you are employed. The advantage here is that you earn while you learn.

Entrance requirements

You must be an active apprentice registered with the Industry Training Authority to register for apprenticeship training at BCIT.

Recommended for success

Grade 10 education or equivalent*, including:

*High school graduation is preferred.

Apprentices with medical or physical difficulties should contact Accessibility Services to arrange an interview with the Institute’s rehabilitation specialist.
