On October 26th, as part of Open Access Week, BCIT hosted an event called Faculty in the Open: Creating Open Educational Resources. BCIT faculty Sabrina Cornish and John Dian will talked about their work in open education. Video of the event is now available.

BCcampus is running an EdTech Sandbox Series with sessions pertaining to open technologies. In September, Ian Linkletter presented about Mattermost (recording available). In October, Brenna Clarke Gray presented about WordPress/Podcasting (recording available). In February 2024, John Cheng presented about H5P (recording available). All of these open tools are available to you here at BCIT.

On March 6th, 2023, BCIT hosted an event for Open Education week: The collaborative creation of Buds, Branches and Bark: A Guide to Winter Identification in the Pacific Northwest, a BCIT OER textbook. Video of the event is now available.

On June 20th, 2023, SFU hosted Maximizing Student Learning and Engagement in Online and Blended Courses with H5P. H5P is an open-source tool for content creation available via the OpenETC.

In May 2023, BCcampus ran a 5-part OER Production Series. The online sessions covered finding OER, working in PressBooks, and accessibility.

BCIT’s Employee Excellence Awards are open for nominations with a category for Teaching Excellence in Open Education. The recipient will be awarded $1,000. Nominations are open until March 1.

OER Development Grants (up to $5,000) closed on Monday, October 17, 2022. Congratulations to the winning applications, and stay tuned for the next call in 2023.

On May 26th, 2022, BCIT’s Educational Technology and Learning Design Committee (part of Education Council) voted to endorse use of OpenETC for open education purposes. Learn more about the OpenETC and what it has to offer.

The BCIT BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program team has been awarded a BCcampus Award for Excellence in Open Education. Congratulations to all the team members!

BCcampus has developed the Adoption Finder, a tool that helps identify open textbooks used at colleges, institutes, and universities in B.C.

The Center for Media and Social Impact (CMSI) has released a Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Open Educational Resources. An argument is made that through fair use provisions in the Copyright Act, creators of OER have more leeway to use copyrighted materials in their work than is generally thought. Appendix 3 specifically addresses fair dealing in Canada.

2021 Educause Horizon Report, Teaching and Learning Edition lists open educational resources (OER) as one of six key technologies and practices.
