Course details

Introduces legislation regulating hazardous materials used and transferred in the workplace and the environment. Fully explores workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) requirements. Investigates lead abatement and asbestos management and control options for their workplace application.

  4. RE-REGISTER in this section ONLY if you were registered in the previous Winter Term, and did not complete all course requirements. This is a one-time option to extend for another 12-week term at a reduced tuition fee. Course work submitted in the Winter Term will be retained; you are ONLY required to submit outstanding course work. Tutor support is available by e-mail (or by phone, if pre-arranged). Upon Re-Registration, expect to receive a confirmation e-mail entitled “OCHS 2420 - Spring Term - Course Information from BCIT”. NO additional print course materials are required from the BCIT Bookstore. The Student Handbook + Request To Write Exam forms will be available online prior to the Spring Term at: www.bcit.ca/distance/learnersupport/resources.shtml. Your initial course from the Winter Term will remain open for VIEWING for several years. HOWEVER, access to your Re-Registration course in the Spring Term will be available on April term start. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize hazardous materials and emergency situations in the workplace.
  • Mark recommendations to reduce those hazards through preparation, analysis, program implementation, and training.
  • Deliver effective, skills-oriented training sessions using a variety of techniques.
  • Apply WHMIS, TDG, asbestos, and lead legislation to the workplace.
  • Prepare dangerous goods for road, rail, air, and marine transport.
  • Liaise with local, provincial, and federal services during training activities and chemical emergencies.
  • Manage asbestos and lead abatement projects and describe the procedures involved in both processes.
