Course details

Explores the provincial OH&S legislation in BC governed by the BC Workers Compensation Act and the Workers Compensation Board Occupational Health & Safety Regulation. The history of BC legislation and how it has evolved sets the tone for discussions on the current legislative system, its enforcement and recent trends toward prosecution. Introduces the BC WCB structure, mandate policies, and procedures. Learning activities revolve around applying key regulations and sections of the Act to the workplace. Students must obtain a copy of the BC legislation or have access to it via the BC WCB's website.

  3. 6 This is an *** ONLINE *** Distance Education course. Internet access is required. To be successful, plan to spend 8-12 hours per week on your studies, starting Week 1. It is recommended that a “Proposed Program” (outlining the entire OH&S 45-credit Certificate) be requested by contacting the Program Head, David Wood at 604-432-8220 / 1-800-663-6542, ext. 8220 or David_Wood@bcit.ca. This “Proposed Program” will assist both sponsor and sponsored student with overall course planning and costs. Contact with the Program Head should be made at least 4 weeks prior to term start. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the highlights of the history of Canadian OH&S legislation.
  • Outline the function and mandate of the BC WCB.
  • Summarize how the BC OH&S legislation is organized and applied.
  • Apply key sections of the BC Workers Compensation Act and the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation to the workplace.
  • Explain how the BC WCB officers conduct workplace inspections, and when they issue warnings, sanctions, and closure orders.
  • Provide advice on workers' compensation assessments, experience rating, sanctions and appeals.
  • Describe how the workers' compensation system functions and the criteria for qualifying for benefits.
  • Explain how and why young workers face high workplace risk.
  • List the basic requirements of a due diligence defence for OH&S, and develop recommendations to prevent or defend against litigation.
  • Describe the purpose and function of industry associations and certification programs in BC.
