Course Overview
This course is aimed at supporting advanced-level learners in transitioning successfully into their BCIT programs. The course also provides opportunities for individuals to improve their reading and writing skills for successful participation in the workplace. In this course, you will learn to read and evaluate technical and academic texts while practicing the types of writing used at BCIT and in the workplace. You will analyze textbooks and instructor communications to help you summarize information for your assignments. Using advanced research skills, you will write an essay or report related to your field of study. Additionally, you will collaborate with others to create a formal proposal, develop and pitch an original idea, and improve your advanced vocabulary and grammar. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Courses includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3- 5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.

- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read a complex, formal text in order to identify essential information about project work expectations, including implicit as well as explicit instructor attitudes, emotions and opinions
- Scan quickly through several informational and argumentative technical academic texts (articles, reports, websites, books, etc.) in order to identify relevance and usefulness of particular sections of texts
- Demonstrate detailed understanding of complex informational and argumentative texts of 1200 words or more with opportunities to re-read difficult sections and use dictionaries or other reference materials
- Write a descriptive-evaluative report of 500 words in response to a specific question, issue, or initiative
- Write a short description of a process, system, strategy, or idea
- Participate with classmates in a project requiring collaborative writing and redrafting using web-based tools that require negotiation, explanation of details, and the following and relaying of instructions to reach a goal
- Describe and evaluate the viewpoints and practices of own and other social groups, showing awareness of how judgments and prejudices are frequently based
