Course Overview
This course aims to improve English skills in reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary, at the high intermediate level while also developing the collaborative skills needed to participate effectively in BCIT programs and the workplace. In this course, you will practice reading and writing technical and academic texts, such as textbooks, lab materials, case studies, and articles. You will apply these skills to real tasks used in BCIT programs and in the workplace. The course focuses on writing with clear organization, accuracy, and logic for professional and academic goals. You will also expand your grammar and vocabulary to succeed at this level. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Courses includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3- 5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.

- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read quickly through long and complex texts to evaluate and prioritize content based on technical and academic tasks and goals
- Obtain information, ideas, and opinions from complex technical academic texts
- Demonstrate understanding of long technical academic articles while using dictionaries or other materials to check meaning
- Write notes or short responses, descriptions or summaries in order to communicate facts, ideas or procedures
- Write up a lab or workshop report to describe concepts, observations, and relevant theories; outline procedure or methodology; discuss data analysis; and report results
- Write a report that describes problems or challenges and compares their methods, procedures, solutions, and/or outcomes
- Participate in online discussion boards, linking own contributions to previous ones in the thread, understanding cultural implications and reacting appropriately
- Describe and evaluate the viewpoints and customs of own and other social groups, showing awareness of how judgments and prejudices are frequently based
