Course Overview
This course aims to improve English skills in listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary at the high-intermediate level while also developing the collaborative skills needed to participate effectively in BCIT programs and the workplace. You will practice listening to complex technical and academic texts, such as case studies and professional articles. You will apply these skills to real tasks, focusing on speaking with clear organization and coherence to succeed at this level. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Courses includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3-5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.
Prerequisite(s)
- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the factors that make a range of personal, professional, and academic spoken interactions successful or unsuccessful
- Demonstrate understanding of complex talks, lectures, and reports on technical academic topics
- Demonstrate understanding of announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard speech at normal speed
- Give detailed descriptions and narratives of experiences that are related to own development and learning
- Communicate complex information and advice on technical academic topics
- Give a clear, prepared presentation on a technical academic topic, with key points and supporting detail, and following up on content-focused questions from audience
- Exchange complex information and advice on a range of matters related to a technical academic topic
- Initiate and participate in extended conversation on general and familiar technical topics with people who are socially and culturally different
